I am continually shocked by how many clients, friends and family are surprised when I tell them how much stress plays a factor in their wellness. I put managing stress at the top of the list, right in line with nutrition and exercise. Medical researchers are not exactly sure how stress increases the risk of heart disease. Stress itself maybe the factor, or it could be high levels of stress cause blood pressure to increase, overeating, sleep and exercise aversion and continued smoking habits. If stress itself is a risk factor,
it could be because of a chronic stress state in the body. A chronic stress state exposes your body to unhealthy, persistently elevated levels of stress hormones like adreneline and cortisol. Stress is caused by different things for different people. Stressors can be constant minor hassles, major lifestyle changes or a combination of both. An interesting note is that the body can not always differentiate between good and bad stress. For example, you may be staying up late and skimping out on sleep in order to spend more time with friends and family. Or maybe you are planning a wedding or party. The mind may say this is good stress but the body can not always tell the difference and in turn reacts the same way by elevating hormone levels. Being able to identify stressors and then ways that work for you to relieve tension are keys to managing stress and preventing heart disease. Stay tuned for stress warning signals, coping strategies and the power of a positive attitude. Happy & Healthy Jumping! Tressa
