Holiday Fitness Gift Idea's

I realize this information is arriving a bit late for the holiday season. Nonetheless, I thought it could be helpful for any last minute shoppers or at least for yourself gearing up for a fit New Year. I love any and all things fitness related so this list was very hard to narrow down. First on the list is the new Timex icontrol watch. This ironman model watch not only tells time but acts as a receiver for your ipod which means you can control your tunes from your wrist. I also think that the Omron Pocket Pedometer is a nice gift for anyone who likes to track their daily fitness. This pedometer is very accurate at counting step and I love it because you do not have to wear it on your wrist (of course, you can if you like) but it also keeps track if is in a pocket or bag. Now, for all the fitness fashionista's out there, the following websites are my favorite place to shop for great workout clothes: www.athleta.com, www.lululemon.com, www.marika.com and www.addidas.com. For the stocking some of my favorites are; Goody stayput elastic hairbands, New Balance ankle socks, emergen-C pakets (found in health food stores), gift cards for massage and training sessions or classes, lip balm for outdoor training, and subscriptions to popular fitness magazines like: Yoga Journal, Self, Shape, Women's Health, Men's Health, and Runner's World. Finally, we all need a new pair of cross trainers or running shoes to support all the jumping we plan on doing in 2008. It is important to replace training shoes relatively often. Many times if shoes are worn primarily indoors they may keep their good looks but the cushion that helps to absorb impact is pretty beat. I suggest replacing shoes every 4-6 months if possible. Let me know if you have any questions about something I mentioned. Wishing you all a very Happy Holiday! Cheers, Tressa

MODERATION

Is the word "moderation" a four letter word for you. I recently ran into a college friend who was complaining about her body and how she does not make the time to workout. She has a very stressful job with hours that vary from day to day and can not seem to fit in any time for fitness. I agreed, making time for fitness is not always easy, even for me and I work in a health club. Then I remembered how she excelled as a college athlete, as a student and now as a successful businesswomen. What could possibly be holding her back. She had the quintessential "all or nothing" approach to her diet and fitness. If she was going to work out, it would be planned and done on a regular basis (everyday of the week.) Because she knew this would be nearly impossible with her current lifestyle, she decided to fore go the effort all together. We talked about moderation and getting something in just a few days a week and how small efforts add up to larger rewards. The same goes for eating well. When you have a slip up in your diet, get over it and get back on track instead of throwing in the towel for the day. Do you feel better on a strict menu and fitness schedule or are have you found ways to have the best of both worlds. I'm interested in hearing what works for you and why. Happy Jumping and Cheers to Good Health! Tressa

Working out post candy binge!

Good Morning!

I just got back from a great outdoor fall workout that I wanted to share with you. Like many, I may have indulged my appetite for sweets a bit too much this week. Somehow the halloween candy that was meant for the kiddies found their way into my hands and into my body. From years of experience, I knew the only thing to get me back on track was a good sweat. I decided to lace up and head outside to enjoy our georgous fall weather. I took my stop watch and jumpsnap along for the workout. I warmed up with an 8 minute brisk walk then found a spot to jump rope for two minutes to get my heart rate up higher. After, getting the blood flowing, I decided to keep things simple and repeat the walk/jump 3 more times. Total workout: 40 minutes with 32 walking minutes and 8 minutes jumping. Given my body weight and duration, I estimate about 300 calorie burn and I feel great! Next time, I will either add another interval or more time jumping for an even larger calorie burn.

Happy Jumping and Good Health to all!

Tressa
