Now that bowl season is over, and now we can concentrate on who is going to be the #1 draft pick, I will take a moment to reflect on 2008. I have been thinking about the changes that occurred in my life last year, both good and bad. Even though the news was bad on the economic front, I would have to say that last year was a pretty good year for me. I’m still alive, and I am still 75lbs lighter then my maximum weight. I have a wonderful wife, two loving children and two somewhat obedient dogs. The ills of the world pale in comparison to this lovely backdrop. I could always ask for more, but who couldn’t? I experienced the same financial turmoil that affected everyone else, but I know things could have been a lot worse. I am thankful for what I have and will work hard to make 2009 a better year. We all have something we can be thankful for and look forward to, so we should concentrate on those things and make 2009 a great year!! Forget the gloom & doom crowd. We are going to keep our New Year’s resolutions this year. I want everyone to take the time to look past their 401(k) and look to their family for support during these challenging times. Let’s exercise, eat healthy, drink lots of water and get out in the sun and fresh air as often as possible in 2009.
That means more time in the park, at the beach or on the water and less time indoors. Do more family activities in 2009. Go to the zoo. Visit historical sites. Plan an adventure, not just a vacation. Do something different. Go somewhere special for camping and/or hiking with the family. Plan for a family 5K or participate in a marathon relay as team. I know running a marathon seems like a daunting task, especially for a family vacation, but many organizations offer families, friends and co-workers the opportunity to run a full 26.2 mile marathon as a team. That means groups of 4-8, depending on the event, split the miles between them to complete the entire 26.2 mile course.
Keep the kids away from their video games for awhile in 2009! Unless they have they Wii of course, then it’s game on! If they have the Wii, join in and have some family competitions on Wii Fit, Wii Sport or any of the other fantastic games available on the system. Try re-creating some of the games, drills and obstacles outside to go along with your Wii gaming experience. It adds a whole new dimension to the games. Our kids love keeping score both inside and outside, then adding them up. One is usually better on the Wii and the other is better at the real thing, so it balances out the score for them. Give it a try and let us know how it works for your family. I want your feedback on this and how you plan on spending your free time in 2009.
