Mother Nature held back on the April Showers this weekend to provide us with wonderful 70 degree weather for the 1st Annual runAPalooza Event in Asbury Park, NJ. The event was put on by the Jersey Shore Running Club to benefit Special Olympics New Jersey and the Children’s Tumor Foundation. It was a great all day event consisting of the 13th running of the Jersey Shore Relay from Point Pleasant to Asbury Park, 1st running of the Asbury Park Half Marathon, 3 Mile Fitness Walk and culminating with an Expo/After Party inside Convention Hall on the Asbury Park Boardwalk. You can visit Runapalooza.org for more info and some great pictures and comments about the event. I handled the planning and running of the Expo part of the event, while my wife and some friends participated in the Jersey Shore Relay. We also had several friends and clients participate in the Fitness Walk and visit the Expo, so it was a GREAT day all around! I hope everyone had the opportunity to get out and enjoy the nice weather.
It is coming to the time of year when we can get outside and do things we haven’t been able to do as much as would like due to the winter weather. There are going to be plenty of local events you can participate in happening almost every weekend moving forward. Whether it is a Fitness Walk, 1 or 2 mile road race, 5k/10k, or even a Half Marathon for those of us higher along the fitness ladder, there is something going on nearby that you can participate in. That doesn’t mean get out there and run a race you are not prepared for. If you have to walk before you run, so be it. Just do it! Try volunteering at an event. It can be a rewarding and even somewhat strenuous task helping out at a charitable event. I’m sure I logged plenty of miles running around Convention Hall carrying boxes and tables before, during and after the Expo. It may not have been running a marathon, but it was certainly a workout!
Check your local paper for lots of free or low cost events that you can go walk around and burn a few hundred calories at. Get out there and participate. You do not have to be an athlete to participate in a fitness walk or a local fun run. They are just for fun! You do not even have to attend an athletic event to get a workout. Visit a local flea market or Garden/Boat/Auto Show to log a few miles of walking around. Get outdoors go to the park or the beach, and just walk around a bit. Do some yard work or some home gardening projects you have been putting off. Visit someplace you haven’t visited in awhile. That is what’s happening here in Asbury Park, New Jersey. The Garden State Film Festival, runAPalooza and next week’s Taste of Asbury are just a couple of the events that have taken place or will take around my neck of the woods. People are returning to the city after years staying away. People are amazed by the resurgence of the Asbury Park Boardwalk and the leaps and bounds being taken all around the City by the Sea. After over a decade long decline, the city is finally taking the steps needed to get itself fit. We can make those same strides to correct the neglect we have shown our bodies. We need to make those corrections in our lives by being more active and watching what we eat. Getting out in the fresh air and sunshine won’t hurt either, so let’s get out there and do something!
Feel free to Twitter me any ideas you have or things you find in your local paper. I look forward to hearing from you. You can also follow us on Twitter here at JSN.
