Gaining Followers on Twitter
I just wanted to touch back upon my use of Social Networking for business and pleasure.  I use Twitter, and to a lesser extent LinkedIn & Facebook, to build relationships both business and personal, stay connected to the outside world, and to find articles and information that I may not have found otherwise. Since I last wrote about using Twitter here @JumpSnapNation I have steadily increased my Follower count and currently have nearly 8,500 Followers.  I have done this by being someone that people enjoy Following.  I provide information, links, and posts that my Followers enjoy and they have in turn helped me grow.
There are quite a few ways to grow your Tweeps, in Twitter-speak this means to gain Followers and we will discuss those during later Posts. First, I’ve put together a list of the Five Basic Characteristics of the people that I like to Follow on Twitter!!  (I also added some terms you need to know to give you a jump-start on using Twitter and reading future posts and articles about Twitter.)

Here are the Five Characteristics I look for in a person to Follow on Twitter:
  1. Interactive
  2. Interesting
  3. Informative
  4. Considerate
  5. Real, live humans (Robots need not apply for the Follower position)!

The people I enjoy following find a way to make me smile with their Tweets, even if they are just informing me what they had to eat or signing off for the day. I also enjoy good quotes, quips, one-liners as well as a good fitness tip! They understand that not all helpful information has to be their own. If they see a good tweet, they “ReTweet” it so their followers can have the opportunity to benefit from the information that is being shared.  This applies to links, blog posts, pictures, videos, birthday wishes, congrats etc…It’s okay to announce what you’re doing, or thinking or eating, as long as you do it in a way that is entertaining to the people who Follow you. Twitter is micro-blogging, if all you do is give a play-by-play of your everyday happenings you will quickly lose followers.

My Tweeps can’t be “drive-by” tweeters! Don’t just log in to Twitter to tell me what you are doing or to post a link to one your sites/blogs and then just leave. That is annoying and will probably get you Un-Followed or Blocked rather quickly.

Read and respond to your Tweets, ask your Tweeps questions and answer their questions in a timely manner if and when asked. Remember that Twitter is a two-way conversation, not a monologue! The more that you participate, the faster your Followers will grow and the more you will get out of being on Twitter. The people I enjoy following find a way to make me smile with their quips and one-liners, even if they are just informing me what they had for breakfast.

Not every tweet should answer the question, “What are you doing right now?” If you are going to participate, you need to give something back. Tweet links to helpful articles or leave bits of advice and information within your Tweets.

When you are on Twitter just Tweet whatever comes naturally to you and watch your Follower count grow!
