Farewell to a Favorite!

Editor's Note: This will be the last post from one of our favorite JSN bloggers, Mike Monroe. While we are very sad to see him go, we find ourselves being very thankful that there are people like him in our world that are willing to do whatever it takes to keep us and our freedoms safe. We will miss you Mike...and Godspeed!

Greetings, once again.  I hope this post finds you in a good way and enjoying the fall weather!

Random Musings:

  1. It’s unseasonably cold here in NYC.   Feels like we went from summer right into winter.
  2. The Jets and the Giants both lost in football this past weekend.  I think the Giants are still a good team.  I don’t know about the Jets—am thinking their starting (rookie) quarterback might be seeing the bench sometime soon.
  3. The Yankees are doing well.  Not that I am a big baseball fan but I do like seeing the energy around the city as it relates to a potential World Series.

So you may remember me posting some things about myself—some pseudo soul searching stuff about life and what I want to be doing to make the world a better place.  Well, without jinxing anything it looks like I found something.  I am in the middle of a long process but it looks promising.  If all goes well, I will be reentering the world of service to country as a civilian.  Sadly, this will be my last post for the blog.  I can’t get into too much detail because, as I said, I don’t want to jinx anything and because of the nature of the work.  It has been a pleasure writing to you all and I hope you have enjoyed the things I have had to say.

The East German Workout

Happy October to you all! It’s a nice time of year, hear in NYC. The temps are cool but not cold and the leaves are changing in Central Park.

And now on to the musings and random thoughts…..

  1. I have a cold. I do everything I can to be healthy. I rarely get sick or even have a cold. I let my sleep slip a bit last week. Wife was out of town and I had the duty. Got about 1.5 hours less sleep a night for three nights. I really think that was my downfall. My message to you—sleep is critical to remaining healthy. Get 7.5+ hours a night.
  2. Put your Blackberry/hand-held tech device down when you are around your kids or friends or spouse/partner. Be present for them.
  3. Good cold weather breakfast - Steel Cut Oatmeal with some raisins or cranberries. Good for you on many levels. Just keep the portions under control.

Remembering...

If you are like me, I am sure you are wondering where the summer went!

A few random thoughts:

  • I recently read a book that challenged readers to do one thing during the day—‘focus on the present’ for an entire day--Meaning, don’t think about the past or the future.  Try to live a day where you just focus on exactly what you are doing, at that time. Try it. It is VERY hard to do…but if you practice you will really see a change in how you do/view things. I have been working on it and find it really helps me focus on the people I am with, at that time (like my wife and kids). Pick it up if you get chance - The Saint, The Surfer and the CEO by Rob Sharma.
  • Check out WithoutBorders.com. Very, very interesting. I know the guy, Fitzroy McLean.
  • I took three months off from the gym.  Did all my summer workouts outdoors, focusing mostly on cycling and calisthenics.  It was a nice break.  I went to the gym today for the first time.   It felt good to get back to some using weights and to change things up a bit.
  • Don’t be afraid to change things up.

Today is September 11th - a difficult day for any American. On September 8th, 2001 I moved to NYC. I had just finished four years of military college, 12 years of service as a Marine Officer, and a stint with the CIA. On September 11th, I was packing a bag to go to the airport to fly to Chicago for my first fitness/trainer certification seminar. Imagine how it felt to watch all the tragedy unfolding just 30 blocks south of where I was.

We all went through something during that period. I went through some serious soul-searching of my own. I remember breaking down, sobbing, on a spin bike as I watched the news on Sept 13th. I felt helpless. I had to really fight the urge to go back to my old life. I had fought in the first Gulf War and in Somalia. I did not want to “chase wars” for the rest of my life but following things from the comfort of my apartment was very hard. It made me feel weak and worthless.

Beat the Heat...
Hello again...I am going to go straight to my random musings:

1. So I am sick, for the first time in about two years. Not sure what it is, but it has got me down. Usually, if I feel something coming on, I do a light workout to break a sweat and get rid of the evil. After a very good night’s sleep I can usually kick it. This little bug is not playing by the rules. Going to Doc tomorrow if it doesn’t clear up.

2. Sleep is the biggest thing you can do for you body to prevent getting sick. When your body is run down it is more susceptible to catching something.

3. Consistent exercise is the next thing you can do for your body to keep it healthy and ward off illness. I hear lots of stories of how a child gets sick and then is runs through a family. I have two kids who get sick, but I rarely do.  I attribute this to getting lots of sleep (at least 7 ½ hours a night) and staying in tip-top shape.

4. My wife’s uncle passed away from Alzheimer’s last night. Terrible end to his life. My wife wasn’t super close to him but because her mom also has Alzheimer's, the foreshadowing is really taking its toll with the family (this is listed at #4 on my list not because of order of importance).

5. The US Marines are involved in some very difficult fighting in Afghanistan. They are also dealing with temperatures in the 120’s. Please keep them in your thoughts and if you come across any Marines (current or former), please tell them “thanks” for their service.

It’s about 94 degrees and SUPER humid in NYC today. We are going through our first major heat wave of the summer. It is gross out! I have worked (in USMC) and raced in the some pretty bad heat. I lived seven months in the Saudi Desert. I have run across the Sahara. I have raced a mountain bike across Costa Rica. I have cycled 508 miles through Death Valley. I know heat and trust me, this is bad!

Evaluating Your Summer Progress
Greetings everyone! How has your summer been?  The NYC area has had some very un-summerlike weather.  We had rain almost every day in June, low temps (only one day in the 90’s) in July, and now the rain again in August.  The rain isn’t just a little sprinkle.  It’s the kind where you need to pull over when driving - torrential downpours.

On to my random musings:
  • I have tried and tried but I cannot get excited about baseball.  It just does not jive with my personality.  I can’t sit still for too long and baseball is a slow sport.  Will stop now before I incur the wrath of baseball fans worldwide.
  • Football will be starting soon.  I do like to watch football but with two little kids and a busy executive wife, spending three hours plopped in front of a game/tv just isn’t in the cards.  Not that it bothers me.  The kids and family are MOST important to me, so I don’t feel at all bummed when I can’t watch a game.  (Plus there is always Tivo!)
  • I am now a proud owner of a ‘Xootr’ Scooter.  My son is really into his new Razor scooter.  My daughter just got a little three-wheel scooter for her third birthday.  I wanted to be able to tag along so I tried out one of those adult scooters.  I have to say it is pretty sweet—comfy, super sturdy, and it makes me feel like a kid.  I have also found it is great exercise for the glutes, quads, calves, cardio system.
About this time every year I am either peaking for a race or event or planning for something new and just doing maintenance training.  I don’t have an event planned for the remainder of 2009.  If you recall I did a big ski-mountaineering event in April-May of this year.  That was my “event” for 2009.  I do have some things on the plate for next year, which I will reveal in good time.

So, I am hitting those August doldrums.  My thoughts range from “The heat makes me not want to work out outside.” to “The gyms are so empty because many people are on summer vacation.” Or, “I am on vacation and don’t feel much like working out.”  When this happens, I make it a priority to take stock of my "summer progress".
