Beat the Heat...
Hello again...I am going to go straight to my random musings:

1. So I am sick, for the first time in about two years. Not sure what it is, but it has got me down. Usually, if I feel something coming on, I do a light workout to break a sweat and get rid of the evil. After a very good night’s sleep I can usually kick it. This little bug is not playing by the rules. Going to Doc tomorrow if it doesn’t clear up.

2. Sleep is the biggest thing you can do for you body to prevent getting sick. When your body is run down it is more susceptible to catching something.

3. Consistent exercise is the next thing you can do for your body to keep it healthy and ward off illness. I hear lots of stories of how a child gets sick and then is runs through a family. I have two kids who get sick, but I rarely do.  I attribute this to getting lots of sleep (at least 7 ½ hours a night) and staying in tip-top shape.

4. My wife’s uncle passed away from Alzheimer’s last night. Terrible end to his life. My wife wasn’t super close to him but because her mom also has Alzheimer's, the foreshadowing is really taking its toll with the family (this is listed at #4 on my list not because of order of importance).

5. The US Marines are involved in some very difficult fighting in Afghanistan. They are also dealing with temperatures in the 120’s. Please keep them in your thoughts and if you come across any Marines (current or former), please tell them “thanks” for their service.

It’s about 94 degrees and SUPER humid in NYC today. We are going through our first major heat wave of the summer. It is gross out! I have worked (in USMC) and raced in the some pretty bad heat. I lived seven months in the Saudi Desert. I have run across the Sahara. I have raced a mountain bike across Costa Rica. I have cycled 508 miles through Death Valley. I know heat and trust me, this is bad!

I had a client come to me the other day. She said she had to do her training run around 12:00 pm because of scheduling issues. She wanted to know if she should run outside or on the treadmill.  As it was predicted to be about 94 degrees by mid-day I told her ‘inside’. She wanted to know why, and I am sure you do too!  Well, I will tell you: If you are not used to heat, and you exert yourself, all your body tries to do is to survive. The body’s mechanisms will focus solely on keeping you as cool as possible, inside and out. If you try to exercise in the heat, you are adding the stress of trying to get your body to perform at a higher level, on top of what it is already doing just to survive the exposure.  The results of trying to work out in the heat results in what I like to call “Garbage Training.”  It really is lost time. You aren’t going to improve yourself, and you will end up more drained than you were. It make take twice as long to recover.

So, try to avoid workout out in the heat of the day. Morning is best. Late afternoon is the worst. Always carry plenty of water and make sure you replenish your electrolytes that are lost through sweating.

Stay cool!
