Fitness Finds
No real theme today.  I am just going to bounce around with some of the different “things” in my head. Sorry for the “downer” last week. Things are a bit better. “In each life a little rain must fall” right?  My dad used to tell me that all the time.  I am going to go out next week to spend a few days with my good friend and his kids. Hopefully, I will be a good distraction.

Few things that I like that are out on the fitness market now. Check them out online.

  1. P90X: Very solid program on DVD.  Not for the faint of heart and requires a bit of equipment, but good all around.
  2. Train360: See www.thehoneyline.com and click on “Train360.”  Great daily workouts for free.  Very little equipment.  Full disclosure—I wrote the workouts and am in the little video clips with Gabby.
  3. Perfect Pushup: Equipment--Two simple handles that give you a good workout with pushing/core muscles.  Make sure you add some “pulling” exercises to balance out all that pushing.  Suggest you get a band or some dumbbells and do some rowing type movements.
  4. TRX: Equipment/program—little pricey but a good system. Good for travel.
  5. And of course, don’t forget about JUMPSNAP! Good all-around workouts for any level.

No Subject...
Hope you all had a great Fourth of July weekend.  I don’t really have a particular subject to write about today.  I am a bit down. If you remember a few months ago, I wrote and mentioned my very good friend (who was also one of my roommates at the Naval Academy).  His wife was in the fight of her life with cancer.  Well, sadly she lost that battle and passed away last Sunday.  She was in her early 40’s and left behind a husband and three kids.  It is very sad all around.  Sorry about not having anything amazing to pass on today.  I will share a few random musings:

1. How about Roger Federer?  Pretty amazing that he has won 15 Grand Slam events in tennis—more than anyone in the history of the game.  Talk about consistency and focus.  Many argue that Nadal is better but I would just point to the fact that 15 wins doesn’t happen in a short span of time.  It takes awhile and you not only have to be great at the game but you must train so well that you don’t get injured.

2. Lance Armstrong is back!  I am excited for this year’s Tour de France.  Lots of unknowns which makes it interesting.

Logging It
Greeting, once again, to all of you out there in JumpSnap Nation. Hope you are enjoying your summer and staying fit.

Random musings on the day:

  • My nearly three year old daughter will eat anything!  This morning she insisted on jelly on top of her eggs.  THEN, she wanted some dry cereal which she tried to dip in ketchup.
  • Reading “The Saint, The Surfer, and the CEO” by R. Sharma.  Enlightening book.  Am usually not into the “self-help” genre but this one is pretty good.
  • Do whatever you can to support a review of the “elections” in Iran.   Those people deserve a chance to live of their own free will.

And away we go….

So, today I want to blab about journaling or keeping a personal log.  I find that it is very helpful to me to not only plan things and to stick to the plan, but also for tracking where I have been so I can continue to improve.

You can use a computer if you like, but I like to actually carry a nice notebook around.  I like to go to the bookstore and buy a nice “journal” looking thing, one that suits my personality.  I also like to use a decent pen.  I find that writing with pen and paper is a great way to detach from technology and to reconnect with the simpler side of life.

Melody & Agony
Hello, once again.  Sunny and warm here today, in NYC. Hope you had a great weekend.

Random thoughts for today’s post:
  • I really am a bit tired of the public’s obsession with “celebrity.”  Why are we interested in someone whose profession is to act in front of a camera?
  • Give a cop or a nurse or a fireman a nice greeting you see one of them.  They are really the people we should celebrate as “celebrity.”
  • Try “Gyrontonics” if you are feeling a need to stretch and align your body.  It was initially used for ballerinas but is applicable to everyone, from the young to the old.

Melody
Someone asked me if I use music when I work out.  The answer is “sometimes.”  Sometimes I like to have a rhythm pounding away in my head, especially on long endurance training work--I find that “trance” music really helps me zone out and keep a nice steady pace. NOTE:  I can’t stand “trance” music just riding around in the car or if just sitting and listening to music.  It works for me, “sometimes”. I am kind of A.D.D. with my music in that I need lots of variety.  I listen to any and ALL types of music.  I don’t really use playlists as everything I download (legally, on iTunes) is something I like and can listen to whenever.  I just shuffle my songs and let them come as they are.

On the flip side, there are some times when I am working out/training that I prefer to listen to the sounds around me and the sounds of my body.  In this day and age of being over stimulated, it is “sometimes” nice to go back to the basics. Try it some time.

Quick & Easy Workout
Happy Spring!  The weather in NYC is finally coming around – warm-ish and sunny.

Random musings for the day:

1. Sitting here with three stitched areas in my body.  All results of a recent visit to the dermatologist.  Nothing serious this time, just some “irregular moles.”  And, since I have had two early melanomas removed over the last 5 years, my doctor is pretty aggressive about cutting me up.  Bottom line - stay out of the sun! If you need to be out in the sun, cover up with SPF protective clothing and sunscreen. In my experience with my endurance racing (lots of time in the sun), the only sunscreen that really works is Blue Lizard.  It is like paste…doesn’t come off when you sweat or swim.  Use it!

2. Check out Enlyten.com.  Great new product out on the market.

3. The wife of one of my closest friends is having a really rough battle with cancer.  It is very, very sad. Her husband was a roommate of mine at the Naval Academy and went on to become a Navy SEAL. His wife has been battling for her life for over a year (after having been in remission for four years, from an earlier battle). She is just 41 years old and has three kids. Please keep her and her family in your thoughts.

So today I was in a rush to get a workout in before getting cut up by the doctor. I remembered one of my favorite workouts. It is a circuit and is based on the top three traditional exercises that require the most muscles to fire. A while back, one of the big universities in Texas published a study that they conducted where they hooked people up to these machines that measure muscles firing during movement/activity. They had the subjects do many of the traditional exercises like push-ups, pull-ups, bench press, squats, etc. They determined the top three exercises that required the most amount of different muscles to fire were (in order), the squat, the pull-up, and the push-up.
