Revamp Your Closet, Find Treasures |
|
It's another Monday morning and you find yourself uttering the famous words heard around the world, "What should I wear?" It's so easy to blend in with the crowd by reaching for the first thing you see in your jam-packed closet: black slacks or jeans and a plain sweater. The monotony of our "daily uniform" can stem from the cluttered and confusing mess that is our closet, but we can solve this wardrobe dilemma with a simple closet revamp. Having nice, well kept clothes boosts confidence and confidence is beautiful. An easy and free way to gain this confidence is with a closet makeover - a good idea for numerous reasons. For starters, it's a form of cleansing and any type of cleaning is therapeutic. Cleaning can help reduce stress and clear your mind. Weeding out those clothes that are out of style, no longer fit or are just worn out always makes room for new pieces. It also makes you feel good to donate them to those less fortunate. Remember, "One man's trash is another man's treasure."
Look for classic pieces first, such as a pencil skirt, a denim jacket, a white, button-down blouse, black slacks, a "little black dress" and good pair of jeans. Purchasing a trendy piece here and there is never a bad idea. One trendy piece added to a classic look can allow for a more creative and updated look while still retaining the air of "class." Don't get carried away buying lots of pieces in the latest fad and don't let those classics disappear into the depths of the closet. Keep the classics toward the front and your wardrobe will stay beautiful and timeless forever.
Aside from keeping the classics and purging the out-of-date mistakes there are other ways to revamp your closet:
Choose quality fabrics. The type of fabric we wear can speak volumes about an outfit and affect the way we feel. Always remember that when purchasing new garments or accessories quality beats quantity every time. One classic black leather jacket that you can wear for years will pay for itself. This is a far better and smarter purchase than several unflattering hooded sweaters that will wear out, fade and shrink, forcing you to spend more money in the long run by purchasing more than you need.
Color coordinate. Group your clothes by color for easier access and ensemble pairing. When your clothes are sectioned in colors, shopping for the colors you need and getting rid of some colors you have too much of becomes much easier. It's important to be able to see what you have and what you need so your wardrobe can become an active asset to your life rather than a chore. By renegotiating the color in your life and finding the colors that work best for you, you can effectively create a happier and younger you.
Use organizational tools. Many people have closets with random stacks of clothes, broken hangers and shoes with missing mates. This problem is easily solvable by integrating organizational tools into your closet. Closetfetish.com has a great line of couture shoeboxes and hangers that provide excellent and quality storage options as well as space maximizing elements.
Fashion design student Brittany Padley offers this final tip: "Even clothes that say 'dry clean only' do not need to go to the dry cleaner. When handwashed carefully, with the right delicate detergent in cool water and laid flat to dry, your garments will stay beautiful in the same shape and color as they were when you first purchased them."
So, next time you find yourself with some free time on the weekend, make the commitment to revamp your closet. You never know what "treasures" you might find in there that you may have completely forgotten you even owned! Some will still have the tags on them, wink.
