When I was younger, we were taught to be very coy with members of the opposite sex - I learned never, ever to tell a boy/man I "liked them." Research reveals that telling someone "I really like you," could make him or her find you more attractive. According to Aberdeen University psychologist Dr. Ben Jones, making eye contact and smiling has a similar effect. Here are some Aging Backwards stats about couples:
1) According to the Mayo Clinic, people who are happily married live longer than their single counterparts. Some experts believe that one reason is stress reduction. It's widely reported that stress can have detrimental effects on an individual's health. Cardiovascular, hormonal and immune pathways are important to a person's well-being and stress can have a negative effect on these systems. It's being part of a "team" that makes married people better equipped to handle stress than single people. Pooling their incomes also helps married couples reduce their stress. Two people can live more cheaply than a single person by sharing housing costs, groceries and other household expenses.
2) Studies show that married adults, particularly men, weigh more and have higher rates of obesity than single adults. People who have never married are the least likely to be obese, according to research. Obesity can lead to Type II diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.
3) A recent study shows that being single at middle age could increase your risk of dementia. Oh great, that's just about everyone I know, me included! Swedish researchers, presenting at a U.S. conference, found that being married or having a partner cuts the risk of developing dementia in half. Scientists believe that social interaction between couples may ward off illness.

Scientists at the University of Michigan have discovered that people who get a "buzz" the first time they smoke a cigarette have a certain gene variant that is lacking in people who cough, choke and get nauseated from that initial smoke. The people with this gene are most likely to become regular smokers, according to the journal Addiction. I won't bore you with all the reasons why smoking is harmful, but I will mention that smoking is contrary to aging backwards. Studies have proven that smoking ages your skin. So, what can you do if you're one of those people who is a "natural smoker?" Here are some tips for quitting.
- Visit the CDC web site. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a whole section devoted to helping people quit the habit.
- Buddy up. Studies show that people who quit together have a better chance of succeeding than those who go it alone.
- See your doctor. Smoking is an addiction, but your doctor has tools to help you overcome that addiction.
- Choose a quit date. Many people have successfully quit smoking and they recommend picking a date to quit and sticking to the date.. It gives you time to prepare mentally for the challenge ahead.
- Remember the mind-body connection. When you think you can't quit, remember that half of all adult smokers have quit, according to the CDC, so you can too.
Taking one day at a time, or even one hour at a time, can help you successfully quit an expensive habit that is dangerous to your health.

Aging Backwards in an Instant |
Wouldn’t it be great to shave off a few years instantly and with very little effort? It’s possible to look younger in just a few minutes with these simple, but practical tips.
Wear the Right Scent Studies show that certain aromas can influence age perception. "Rose" has been shown to remind men of "older women" while the scent of citrus denotes "younger women." The world’s first anti-aging perfume, Ageless, incorporates pink grapefruit with pomegranate, jasmine, mango and musk, a combination that’s been proven to make men perceive women as eight years younger.
Use Sunless Tanners A nice tan can be slenderizing and give the appearance of a youthful glow, but sunbathing can also make your skin wrinkled, leathery and uneven in tone. Today’s self-tanners are effective and natural looking. The Solerra Sunless Tanning Mitt is my favorite way to get the slimming, youthful effect of a healthy tan without the self-tanner ever touching my hands.
Take Care of Your Hands Hands can show your age, but here’s a quick way to fool Father Time. Research shows that photos of hands with nail polish and jewelry look younger to study participants than photos of the same hands without polish and jewelry. Also, hiding blue veins and other imperfections on the hands is simple using a tinted moisturizer with SPF 15 or higher, such as Olay's Touch of Foundation.
Incorporating these quick shortcuts into your regular routine can put you on the fast track to looking younger and feeling more confident.

"One is wise to cultivate the tree that bears fruit in our soul." Henry David Thoreau, poet (1817 - 1862)
Sometimes the simplest things can bring beauty and enjoyment to your life. Take the lemon, for example. Lemons are natural refreshers in the hot summer months and there are many ways to take advantage of their native properties. California and Arizona are the largest producers of lemons in the U.S., according to Sunkist.com, producing around 95 percent of America's crop. The two major varieties of lemons are Lisbon and Eureka, but they're so similar that even the experts have a hard time telling them apart. The Meyer Lemon, discovered by Frank N. Meyer in 1908 is thought to be a cross between a lemon and an orange or mandarin. Lemons have long had a prominent place in history. According to lore, the ladies of Louis XIV’s (1638-1715) court loved to bite lemons to keep their lips seductively red and the Romans valued lemons as an antidote to all poisons. Here are some ways to take advantage of the fact that lemons are available year-round.
Lemony Tips: - Highlight Your Hair. When I was growing up, my blonde friends would use lemon mixed with a little salt and water, then go out in the sun, to naturally "streak" their hair. We brunettes never tried it, but I remember it worked well for blonde hair. It can be drying, so I don't recommend trying it too often.
- Make Lemonade. You've probably heard the old saying, "When life hands you lemons, make lemonade." Squeezing lemon juice into your water can make it taste and smell better. Adding a little natural sweetener, such as stevia, will cut the tartness, if desired. Freeze lemon juice in ice trays and add those to your water - refreshing!

Finding Your Own Happiness |
If you're looking for your "soul mate" or even if you're already in a relationship, you can only make things better for both of you if you're happy within yourself, not dependent on someone else to "make" you happy. In fact, studies show that happily married couples liver longer, healthier lives than single people. So, how can you just "make yourself happy" if you're not a happy person? Try these tips for a new attitude that just may make you and those around you smile more.
Aging Backwards Happy Tips:
Volunteer Numerous scientific studies show that acts of kindness can result in significant mental and physical health benefits. Helping can bring on a rush of euphoria, followed by a longer period of calm, often called a "helper’s high" that releases the body's natural painkiller, endorphins, thus reversing feelings of depression, hostility and stress. The greater the frequency of volunteering, the greater the health benefits.
Keep these statistics in mind:
- Personal contact with the people being helped is important.
- Helper's high results most from helping people we don’t know.
- Regular club attendance, volunteering, entertaining or faith group attendance is the happiness equivalent of getting a college degree or more than doubling your income.
