Give the Gift of Health
What better gift to give someone you care about than the gift of health? Here are a few of my favorite ideas:

Resistance Bands
I sell a set of 3 six-foot resistance bands, with a door anchor and a workout plan for $25.  Target sells the bands individually (but 3 or 4 foot ones) for $12.99 each. Resistance bands are great for strength training, you can take them with you when you travel, and it's almost impossible to injure yourself.

Pedometer
A pedometer is a wonderful motivator for helping you move more and track your progress. While you can buy very inexpensive pedometers, studies have shown them to be inaccurate, and they frequently break.  The pedometer I sell is high-quality, with a safety strap so it won't fall off.  It tracks your steps, mileage, time spent, calories burned, and has a clock.  It sells for $28. A walking log book comes with it.

Tips for a Thinner Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving only comes around once a year, so why not go ahead and splurge? Because gaining weight during the holiday season is a national pastime. Year after year, most of us pack on at least a pound (some gain more) during the holidays -- and keep the extra weight permanently. But Thanksgiving does not have to sabotage your weight, experts say. With a little know-how, you can satisfy your desire for traditional favorites and still enjoy a guilt-free Thanksgiving feast. After all, being stuffed is a good idea only if you are a turkey!

Get Active
Create a calorie deficit by exercising to burn off extra calories before you ever indulge in your favorite foods, suggests Connie Diekman, MEd, RD, former president of the American Dietetic Association (ADA). "'Eat less and exercise more' is the winning formula to prevent weight gain during the holidays," Diekman says. "Increase your steps or lengthen your fitness routine the weeks ahead and especially the day of the feast."

Eat Breakfast
While you might think it makes sense to save up calories for the big meal, experts say eating a small meal in the morning can give you more control over your appetite. Start your day with a small but satisfying breakfast -- such as an egg with a slice of whole-wheat toast, or a bowl of whole-grain cereal with low-fat milk -- so you won't be starving when you arrive at the gathering.

'Tis the Season of Temptation

Here are six tried and true strategies to help you go from Halloween to New Year's without gaining (too much) weight. It starts with those buckets of Halloween candy. Then it's on to Thanksgiving (stuffing, sweet potatoes with gooey marshmallows, pumpkin pie). After that pigout, there are holiday parties with calorie-laden snacks and drinks, Christmas and finally the big bash on New Year's Eve. It's the season of temptation and for many of us, it coincides with colder weather – which means we are less likely to get outside and work off our indulgences. No wonder diet- and exercise-related resolutions are at the top of our list on January 1! But you don't have to give in to this annual binge. We asked registered dietitian Elisa Zied, a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, for advice on how to survive the holidays with your weight goals intact. Zied, author of "Feed Your Family Right!", argues that healthy eating doesn't mean total deprivation. In other words, you can have your cake and eat it, too—as long as you don't go overboard. Some tips:

1. Budget for Indulgences
On Halloween, you know that candy is coming later in the day, so prepare yourself.

Know the Signs of a Heart Attack & Stroke

Dear Everyone:

I sent the bottom note in November, reminding everyone about the signs of a heart attack.  This is all important information, as the signs of both heart attack and stroke don't always present themselves the way they do in the movies. This can be scary and life-threatening stuff. With a stroke or heart attack, getting prompt medical care (at the hospital) is very important.  Over half of all damage caused by a stroke occurs in the first 90 minutes. It's better to err on the side of caution.

Again, here are the warning signs of a stroke:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • Sudden, severe headache with no known cause
