The Blame Game
January is over, and its time to reflect.  If we didn’t do so well on our diets, this is where the blame game starts. Many dieters will start blaming themselves. They will have many negative thoughts, I am a cheater, I have no self control. I stopped going to the gym…..

Blaming yourself is destructive. If you consider yourself a bad person, then you are very likely to think that the battle is over…bad people can’t lose weight, so you shouldn’t even continue with your diet.

I offer you a much more constructive observation: You are not a bad person or a bad dieter, you are a good person who happens to make bad mistakes on your diet. If the mistakes and behaviors are bad, they can be fixed or minimized.  See, you can learn from mistakes.

Maybe you made the mistake of thinking that you didn’t need help. OK - that can be fixed. Get help with the problem areas. Create a plan to make the problem go away.

Appetite: There are natural and pharmaceutical ways to curb your appetite. You could also use acupuncture and/or hypnotism.

Cravings:
Neurotransmitter testing.  If you really can’t stop eating, like gamblers can’t stop gambling, you may have low dopamine levels (i.e. a chemical imbalance). Get tested. For more information www.neurorelief.com. You may have a vitamin deficiency.

Exercise: It’s cold. The gym is crowded. There are many reasons why you are not working out. That’s OK, wear your pedometer and get in 10,000 steps.  Exercise has been shown to be a great adjunct for people to maintain weight loss. But it is not that helpful in helping lose weight. Sounds hard to believe but it is true. The reason why is that most people only burn around 300 calories a day at the gym but they can eat more calories than that in one snack (one banana can have more than 120 calories). So if you do not like the gym, that’s fine. Just increase your movement by walking more.

Maybe your body isn’t up for the challenge of weight loss. Your cortisol and insulin levels can be out of whack, so it’s no wonder why you can’t lose weight. If your metabolism is bad, you can fix it. See a specialist. This is especially important in February because your thyroid hormone level may be dropping, and your weight loss may come to a halt. Don’t let your frustration with something that’s inevitable stop you.   Acknowledge that your body doesn’t want to lose weight and see a doctor to check your free thyroid hormone level. In addition, if your doctor allows it, try cayenne peppers and green tea to rev up your metabolism. Don’t accept defeat.

Use this month to reassess, learn from others, learn from our mistakes, and get fit!
