Belly Fat

There has been a lot of talk about abdominal fat. It has been linked to heart disease and many of us are trying to lose it for health and cosmetic reasons. Sometimes we resort to things like sit ups and tummy tucks. But the base of the spare tire lies deep inside and doesn’t respond well to such things. High cortisol levels is one thing that may it resistant to all our good intentions.

Cortisol is a hormone made by the adrenal glands and it plays a large role in the metabolism of the food that we eat. It is very sensitive and easily overwhelmed and that can lead to weight gain. Both high and low cortisol levels will cause this. Living a hectic lifestyle and watching the news is one way we cortisol imbalance. Even over doing it with exercise can have adverse effects. Lack of sleep definitely upsets the cortisol balance. If your days are filled with multi tasking and never ending to do lists you should consider getting your cortisol levels checked. Actually if you live in America or have kids like I do, you should get your cortisol levels checked. An imbalance could be at the route of chronic fatigue, brain fog, and weight gain.

In my office we send specialized kits to people who can't seem to figure out why they are falling apart. These kits are shipped directly to people and are done conveniently at home at different times of the day.  Depending on what the results show natural remedies are implemented. For those who are not interested in getting tested, here are some tips to soothe your adrenal glands:

1. Meditate
2. Practice deep breathing
3. Get at least six hours of sleep at night
4. Do not over do it with exercise if you are already stressed out
5. Contact my office ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ) for more information on high and low cortisol levels as both need to be addressed.

I took the saliva test and found my cortisol levels bottomed out by noontime and boy did I feel it. I felt tired upon waking, and was extremely exhausted by noon. I couldn't sleep through the night and the sleep I did get was of poor quality. Though I had no appetite, I no longer could lose weight, in fact I gained back all that I had lost. I had no appetite, yet craved sweets to compensate for the energy I was not getting from inadequate hormone levels. I was irritable and frustrated at the drop of a hat -- which is no way to live. The saliva test results confirmed my symptoms and I began taking hydrocortisol, a natural (bioidentical) form of cortisol. My symtpoms improved almost immediately. As opposed to a simple blood test, which is gives you a snapshot of what is in your bloodstream not in your body's tissues, a saliva test provides a more comprehensive picture of what your levels are thoughout the day. If you suspect you have low cortisol levels, it's a good idea to have your thyroid levels checked via bloodwork as well because your body may have taxed your adrenals to get the energy it needs to compensate for the lack of thyroid (T3). If you suffer from seasonal allergies, believe it or not, the natural cortisol will eleviate those syptoms as well and I am speaking from personal experience. Beats having to take expensive over-the-counter meds!
