The Smallest State Takes a Big Step in Fighting Childhood Obesity |
A recent article in USA Today highlights a Delaware day care center that is replacing snack food with healthy choices. Congratulations! The article goes on to characterize this as a fledgling movement, which is unfortunate. However, most policy change starts as a small, fledgling movement.
There is a large body of research supporting the impact that early childhood education has on children. Children who participate in high quality early childhood programs enter school with a distinct advantage over children who do not have access to this education. This advantage grows as children continue to learn and benefit from the skills they mastered in the early years.

Kudos to the NFL and NY's Gov. Patterson |
|
While it has been a while since I’ve posted, obesity continues to be in the news and on our minds. That's why I want to take this opportunity to point out two positive pieces of news amid the sea of bad news filling the airwaves. Number 1 In a stroke of irony, when many of us are sitting down and watching football, perhaps with plates of bad and fattening food in front of us, the NFL filled their valuable advertising time promoting the NFL initiative NFL Play 60, which is the NFL movement for an active generation. NFL PLAY 60 is a national youth health and fitness campaign focused on increasing the wellness of young fans by encouraging them to be active for at least 60 minutes a day. They are partnering with other community organizations to reverse the childhood obesity trend by 2012.
Congratulations to the NFL for this program and congratulations to the players and partnering organizations! Number 2 Now get this - the Governor of New York has introduced an obesity tax! With all the troubling economic news, declining state and municipal revenues there is a bright spot; creative policy solutions to raise revenue. Perhaps the most interesting and hopefully promising policy proposal to date is the obesity tax proposed by Governor David Patterson (D-NY) from New York. In an effort to raise revenue to pay for various services, Governor Patterson has proposed a new tax on non-diet soda. The tax is estimated to raise $404 million. Let’s hope this idea grows (no pun intended!) .
It is certainly a novel idea - what do you think about it? And what else do you think should be taxed? |

We've been really busy designing our website and forgive me for not posting for a while. Today provides a great opportunity to point out some really good news provided by The Foundation For Child Development in a recent report. The report is the first wide ranging study looking at children's lives from birth through age 11. The report contains some good news in that more kids are in preschool, incidences of lead poisoning are down, kids math and reading scores are up in school. This report looked at about 25 indicators and concluded a 10% boost in children's well-being between 1994-2006. |

As the holidays rapidly approach and we begin what is typically the most fattening and unhealthy time of year, there is a bright spot.....rather..... bright star on the horizon. For those who reside in the Northeast, you may want to check out Hannaford Foods for your holiday shopping. They have created a healthy shopping approach known as the Guiding Stars that ranks nutritional and healthy value of the food in the stores. Good food has one star, better food has two stars and the best food has three stars. The food is clearly labeled and helps people to choose healthy foods. Even more promising are the shopping trends among consumers. The store has reported high sales for the healthiest foods and in stores where this experiment began. Even more promising they are retaining those high sales after six months, which is the traditional time frame when those unhealthy habits return. The store also offers healthy recipes and cooking tips. Congratulations to Hannaford and hopefully more stores will follow suit. Please remember that when we sit down to Thanksgiving dinner, help your children to choose the healthy items and to eat them in moderation. They will appreciate it later. Have a Great Thanksgiving ! |
