Obesity and Public Policy

In Brad's previous post, he is absolutely correct. More honesty and less diplomacy could go a long way. Shape-Up America is a fantastic organization with a great mission. My Fitness 1st looks forward to a long and fruitful relationship with those folks.

I was reading some article today about imposing a significant tax on sweets and unhealthy snacks. This is a proposal in Britain. It brings up an interesting policy question. What could governments do to change individual behavior? Is it a financial incentive or penalty? Would this be enough to change unhealthy habits? We have seen a real change with cigarette smoking. Governments impose financial penalties in the form of increased taxes and people still smoke, despite the obvious medical and health issues. It is only now that we are seeing smoking banned, when the studies showed passive smoke harms those non-smokers. Non-smokers and governments working together are now banning smoking in many public places, like restaurants and bars. This has been a popular change in New York City and throughout states like Massachusetts.

Did you know that obesity has surpassed cigarette smoking as the biggest health issue in the United States? So, what would work? Getting people who are not obese to recognize the costs associated with obesity? We all pay higher insurance premiums due to costs of illness related to obesity. Would taxes on snacks and high-fat foods change behavior? Is it a public education issue?

How do we as a society get people to change their behavior?

Fighting Childhood Obesity- We Are Not Alone

Greetings everyone,
I've been busy traveling and keeping busy with updating and redesigning our website, with a modified look coming soon. In the meantime, there has been plenty of news about obesity fighting efforts around the country. From policymakers to athletes, everyone is beginning to focus on addressing this crisis.

First, we have Shaquille O'Neal, NBA Superstar and Law Enforcement Officer now has a television show called Shaq's Big Family Challenge a reality show and challenge to everyone to help conquer childhood obesity. What a great idea and this show will certainly help people to focus on the epidemic of obesity. The show airs on your ABC affiliates on Tuesday nights. For more information check out the link at the bottom.

Up in New York City, Mayor Mike Bloomberg rolled out a privately funded plan to give cash and incentives for children and families to lead healthy lifestyles, make regular doctor's visits and do well in school. More about this plan here.

Lastly, Today President Bush discussed the importance of exercise and fitness for the mind and body.

If the President of the United States can find time for exercise and fitness, I think anyone can find the time.

OK, so if even if you are not a fan of the NBA, NYC or the President; even if you are not an athlete or a governmental leader; I think we all can agree that obesity is dangerous and must be eliminated. These leaders have recognized this and are taking steps to help.

What do you think of these initiatives?

My Fitness 1st eliminating obesity

My name is Dan Fuller and I'm the Executive Director of My Fitness 1st, a foundation to eliminate obesity in children. This foundation was created by Brad and me. This is another exciting venture that will give back to children, schools and communities who are all trying to eliminate obesity.

I’ll be appearing her regularly to discuss a range of obesity issues including some of the promising practices and policies that work. I’ll also talk about some of the problems and issues that are preventing obesity reduction. We will also explore some of the underlying causes and concerns and ways to eliminate obesity in your home and in your community. I’ll provide data and information and other interesting posts to keep obesity elimination in the forefront. More than anything I look forward to hearing your responses and suggestions.

Obesity among children aged 6 to 11 more than doubled in the past 20 years. The rate among adolescents aged 12 to 19 more than tripled, increasing from 5% to 17%. One child out of five is obese!

We all pay the price for obesity. Obesity has surpassed tobacco as the greatest health concern facing society today. Obesity and related illnesses cost us over $90 billion annually. That is billion with a "B".

As My Fitness 1st continues to build our capacity to eliminate obesity in children, I would love your input. We have some great ideas and you will see them here as we build up the foundation. However, we would love to know what parents and communities are doing to eliminate obesity. What do you need to help you in this endeavor? We all know that the home and community are great places to begin this vital work. Let us know what challenges you are facing in obesity elimination in your community. Also, tell us what is working very well. Further, share your ideas for topics or items you would like to learn more about in obesity elimination. I look forward to hearing from you.

Remember, one child out of five is obese, and, together we can and must change this epidemic.
