Break Your Addiction to Sugar!

Former sugar addict, “Sugar Liberator” and holistic health counselor, Connie Bennett is an experienced journalist and author of SUGAR SHOCK! She has worked as a staff reporter, colum-nist and freelancer for  many media outlets, including The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, TV Guide, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Dallas Morning News, The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Living Fit, Entertainment Weekly, and many more. Connie, who jokingly calls herself an “Ex-Sugar Shrew!” now coaches people worldwide break free of their addiction to sugar and refined carbs. Conquering your sugar  and carb habit could help you to lose weight, become more cheerful, improve your memory and even boost your libido.

CRAIG PEPIN-DONAT: So, Connie, I want to start off by talking a little bit about your book, SUGAR SHOCK! It’s an excellent text and I had been speaking with so many experts during our symposium, talking about different things like chemical and toxic exposure and how we’re ex-posed to all of these different types of diseases. But, I have to tell you that your book, SUGAR SHOCK!, which is subtitled How Sweets and Simple Carbs Can Derail Your Life -- and How You Can Get Back On Track, really covers an issue that I think is unique and that people really need to know about. Sugar is something that we’re all constantly exposed to, and according to your research, it can have some major implications on our health.

CONNIE BENNETT: Huge implications. Your sugar habit can send you to your grave early, and I am not exaggerating in any way.

CRAIG PEPIN-DONAT: Yes, and people don’t realize it. You started out as a sugar addict, and you had many health problems yourself, right? So, why don’t you give us a point-by-point descrip-tion about all of your symptoms and how you came to realize that you had a sugar problem your-self?

CONNIE BENNETT: So you want to know about Connie the “Sugar Shrew”? [Laughter] In 1998, I was besieged by a host of bewildering ailments. I was waylaid by ferocious headaches, excessive fatigue and inexplicable moods swings, which were quite embarrassing. I also had difficulty concentrating, anxiety and severe PMS, which I’m sure a lot of women will relate to.. The list goes on and on. In my book, SUGAR SHOCK!, I actually included a list of list my 44 ailments at the time.

Now, at the same time, I was a huge sugar addict; I loved red licorice, chocolate and hard candies. I would go clear across town to go buy these special hard candies. But, they were low-calorie hard candies, which was very important, I thought. But even though they were low in calories, they had no nutrients. At the time, I was a freelance journalist, and I would go from sugar high to sugar high in order to meet my deadlines.
So I had a huge sugar habit. I had these 44 ailments. But, I hadn’t put the pieces together that they were connected. Then, my boyfriend at that time decided to bid me goodbye. He could not handle some of my strange behavior, such as picking arguments for no reason. In retrospect, I was picking these arguments about maybe an hour to an hour and a half after I’d eaten sweets. Now, I’m seeing the connection. He also used to call me “Sleepyhead,” because I would sleep for 9-10 hours because I was just so tired all the time.

CRAIG PEPIN-DONAT: Well, I really need to let people know, when I talk about your busy schedule, a little bit about your background. I mean, after all, you do operate one of the largest and most prestigious medical practices in New York City. So, a lot of times people use the phrase “taking time out of your busy schedule” loosely, but you’re schedule is particularly hectic, isn’t it?

DR. HENRY LODGE:
There doesn’t seem to be quite enough hours in a day.

CRAIG PEPIN-DONAT: So, I’ve read your entire book, Younger Next Year, and I’ve gone through most of Younger Next Year for Women. Of course, I also had the opportunity to interview your co-author, Chris Crowley. He was phenomenal—very inspirational. Your books are really universal, I think. They’re not just for people who are getting old, they’re really just for anyone who wants to live better; anyone who wants to improve their health; and, anyone who wants to find out all of the answers. So, I want to dig right in and start out by having you give a little background on your practice and on your patient, Chris Crowley, and how he and other patients led you to write Younger Next Year?

Eating for Health

Joel Fuhrman, M.D. is a board-certified family physician and one of the country’s leading nutritional medicine experts. He is a frequent guest speaker at hospital grand rounds and has lectured at benefits for the American Heart Association and the U.S. Olympic Team. Dr. Fuhrman has been interviewed for hundreds of magazines, radio, and television shows and he is widely published in various medical journals. Dr. Fuhrman’s most recent book, Eat For Health, guides the reader through a gradual transition to increase the level of micronutrients in his/her diet, while losing the addictive and psychological dependencies of unhealthy foods. Dr. Fuhrman is the author of Eat to Live: The Revolutionary Plan for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss, which has gone through 11 printings in hardcover and 6 printings in paperback. Below is an excerpt of my interview with Dr. Fuhrman.

CRAIG PEPIN-DONAT: Now, Dr. Fuhrman, you are responsible for providing some of the most extensive educational information in the world related to health and nutrition. Now you have a new book, Eat For Health, and it happens to be a two-book set. We’re fortunate at FitAdvocate.com to have been able to review that book, preview it, and I have to say it is absolutely tremendous. It’s not a book that you read; it’s more a book that you study and learn from, and you could pick it back up and gain incredible amounts of information as you read through it. I’ve been pouring through the pages of the first book in the set, and the depth of information and your knowledge is just truly remarkable. I just want to start out by saying that it’s just fantastic.

DR. JOEL FUHRMAN: Oh, thanks so much. Well, it’s designed so it really can help people.

CRAIG PEPIN-DONAT: I think it’s going to do more than just help people; it’s actually going to save lives, truthfully, and we’re going to talk a lot about that. It’s really more than just a book, and it’s certainly not a diet book because I’ve read hundreds of diet books, and every time I read one I roll my eyes in the back of my head, because it’s just repeating a lot of the same information over and over again, or information that we’ve all heard before and that we’re recycling. This is really more of a lifestyle system that’s broken down into four specific phases. So I’d like to start out by giving an overview of what people can expect from your new book, Eat For Health, and to get into detail about how these four phases actually work.

The Secret Truth About Big Pharma

We live in the “age of drugs.” Not illegal, addictive substances, but legal over-the-counter and prescription medications. These substances can be just as dangerous as cocaine and crystal meth when they take the place of a healthy lifestyle, good nutrition and regular exercise.

High blood pressure? Pop a pill. High cholesterol? Take this. Sexual problems? A little blue pill will fix that. There’s a pill for every ailment, but society, as a whole, is getting sicker by the day.

Shane Ellison, the people’s chemist, began as his career as an organic chemist, working for the Big Pharma. But his dedication to natural health prompted him to empower thousands of people to say “no” to prescription drugs and yes to natural medicine and better health. In this interview, Ellison talks with Craig Pepin-Donat about the “pill-popping culture” and its dangers.

Craig Pepin-Donat: Let’s start out with an overview of the current health status in our society and the path we’re on.

Shane Ellison: If we look at the big picture of health in America, we have to say we’re the sickest we’ve ever been. It’s attributable, paradoxically, to the prescription drug epidemic. We have an average of 14 prescriptions being written for every single individual. At the same time, we have over 200,000 deaths as a result of it. On top of that, we have 2 million people who suffer from what’s known as drug-induced illness.

We’re not sick from any type of infectious disease; we’re sick from all the toxins that we’re being fed by prescription drugs and, of course, our lifestyle habits.

Every single drug is known chemically as a “xenobiotic.” That’s just a fancy term for toxin. When you swallow these drugs, your kidney and liver have to process them. Over time, if you’re using drugs just as you would take vitamins, the kidney and the liver can fail. We have about 19,000 people who die every single year with some type of kidney or liver failure.

Protect Yourself Against Cancer

Every year, the FDA and CDC release frightening statistics: One in every three men will contract some form of cancer and one in every nine women will get breast cancer.

The following is just a small portion of the life-saving advice renowned author Mike Adams (also known as The Health Ranger) offered recently at the International Health and Fitness Symposium. If you are ready to lower your cholesterol levels and prevent cancer, heart disease and diabetes the natural way, you must read on.

Craig Pepin-Donat: You stated that your ‘risk of getting cancer is as close to zero as you can possibly get in modern society today.’ How did you accomplish this?

Mike Adams: I don’t eat any cancer-causing foods. In fact, I eat anti-cancer foods. Did you know that there’s an active ingredient in turmeric, which is an ingredient in curry, called curcumin. Curcumin causes cancer tumors to be unable to grow by destroying the blood vessels that feed those tumors, making the tumors die inside your body. If you combine curcumin with black pepper, it multiplies the effectiveness of curcumin by 1,000 times. It makes it the most powerful natural chemotherapy you can ever experience. You eat curry and pepper, and add some broccoli, and for the next 48 hours, your body will be destroying cancer tumors better than any chemotherapy known to modern science.
