It's Friday, and therefore, it is appropriate to talk about beer! Then again, it's always appropriate to talk about beer isn't it? I wanted to share a great story about one of my GWL Club members and fellow Dads from this week. It's a great story that I suspect many dad's out there can relate to.
I was on the phone with this member reviewing his data which led us to his Food Log. This guy has a very demanding job which often involves meals out and entertainment with clients. I'm happy to announce he's lost 7 lbs in his first three weeks on the program which is a huge accomplishment. What was great about our discussion was the focus on his liquid calories. You see, one evening he had one Bud Light and four Summer Fest brews while out with clients. These five beers accounted for about 35% of his total calories for the day which actually put him in a calorie surplus for the day by 86 calories. Not what we want when trying to lose weight.
Now you know I don't care that he had the beers, especially when my role is to merely draw attention to and raise awareness. What was interesting was what he said once we started talking about it. I merely pointed out that the Bud Lights are 110 calories while the Summer Fest are 168 calories each. He quickly jumped in and said, "You know, I normally don't even drink that beer but everyone else was so I said 'I'll have what they're having' not even thinking about it". He went on to tell me that he normally orders Bud Light. We then talked about swapping out the Summer Fest for BL which would have saved him 232 total calories and put him in a deficit. Notice I didn't scold him and say, "Why did you have 5 beers?" I merely made a suggestion of a different choice without impacting the quantity in this case. We then discussed other hypotheticals that could have helped his calorie count without materially impacting his fun. How about one Summer Fest and the rest Bud Light? Or how about only four total Bud Lights and swap the fifth beer for water? That would have reduced his total liquid calories for the day by 342. You get the picture. The point is, a series of small tweaks is a much more sustainable way to introduce positive changes. I know we both got a lot out of this discussion and perhaps you can too before bellying up to the bar for happy hour tonight. I'm headed over to Toby's house on Saturday, and I'm psyched to see his transformation. He's been hitting the gym daily at 5:30 AM, and I'm very proud of his accomplishments. Healthy Jumping...
