Hey Dad, Lose The Gut - Soccer Anyone?

Greetings JSN! I'm writing to you this week from the 4th annual Urban Soccer Collaborative Symposium in conjunction with US Soccer Foundation. This years theme is titled "Soccer...It Does a Body Good." I'm one of the presenters during the breakfast slot sharing my philosophy about weight loss. It's always fun when they put the weight loss guy during one of the meals. "Put the doughnut down and step away from the buffet table..."

The focus is primarily on the underpriviledged urban youth market with lots of discussion about what else - childhood obesity. The passion in the room is off the charts. The grass roots approach to keep the focus on the kids is admirable. So many of the speakers and attendees just want to succeed and do more for their kids in the program. Isn't that exactly what we talk about the goal is for us dad's - to get healthy for our kids?

Whether you play soccer or not, it's the largest sport on the planet. As a former competitive high school player myself, what's great about it is you are constantly running. It takes great cardio endurance and of course good muscle tone in the legs. The legs are some of the largest muscles in the body which means you'll burn more calories by getting them engaged.

The other cool thing about soccer is that you can practice with your kids. Several of the speakers today chatted about the need to encourage kids to play outside of scheduled practices and games. This is perfect. If your kids play soccer, ask them to kick the ball around and two goals are met while spending time with your kids. You get to burn some calories, and they get to work on their skills.

BONUS VIDEO: Here's some bonus footage that needs no explanation but fits perfectly into our mission of becoming better role models for our kids, check out the video - Go Eddie Go.

Healthy Jumping...

Soccer Anyone?
written by Jennifer Hudgins, April 23, 2010
Soccer is a big hit at our house! Our family is always outside shooting hoops, jumping on trampoline, kicking a ball etc. I believe one of the main reasons for the increase in childhood obesity is video games, hand held games and computers. We had none of those growing up. The above are wonderful babysitters. Children don't know how to play outside anymore. Most beg to come inside while out- Come on parents!!
