Chris Chirstie, You Won - Now Lead by Example

If you've read my previous posts you know I have a high intolerance for politicians. Sure, I voted this past Tuesday in the small mayoral election in my town. But I voted for the Independent candidate for the first time in my life  (coincidentally, he got 12% of the total vote which was pretty impressive). If you read the paper or watched any cable news network over the past two days, you couldn't avoid the discussion about the gubernatorial race in Virginia and New Jersey and the fact that Republicans won them both (I guess we all need a break from the H1N1 coverage). Like everything in politics, that set off a huge debate on what it means on a variety of levels.

Since I live in Maryland, I have no idea what went on with the New Jersey election, but I gather it got pretty heated towards the end like most highly-contested races. There was even one story floating around about how Corzine was playing the "fat card" to try and discredit Chris Christie. Making fun of someone who is obese never helps the situation. Equally derogatory is the notion that it's not the individuals fault. It is their fault and it is in their control to change it.

I'd like to make a public challenge to the new governor and ask him to leverage the most powerful form of influence anyone can use: lead by example and lose the weight while in office.

In the heat of the health care debates where obesity-related disease costs our system $150 billion annually, he could do some amazing work just leading by example and getting healthy. This is not an attack on the new obese, perhaps morbidly obese (these are factual clinical terms) governor but rather what I think comes with the territory of being a public official. Lead by example.

If you don't know where to start Governor, call former President Bill Clinton and former Governor Mike Huckabee who both successfully changed their lifestyle and dropped the pounds. I'm guessing their schedule was equally as hectic and the new governor's is going to be as well. Add it to your agenda and make it a priority. It could be your single biggest accomplishment while in office both personally and politically.

Good luck and let me know if you need any help.

Healthy Jumping...
