Lose Weight and Maybe Your Liver

For those of you who have read my book, The Ah Ha's of Weight Loss, you know I'm a little fanatical about sounding the alarm dispelling the myth of the magic weight loss pill. In fact, it's why I specifically address it in chapter one because I thought it was the only way to allow my readers to truly understand how to achieve real weight loss. They just don't exist.

But, 9 million of you didn't listen last year and purchased the ever enticing, hot model touting Hydroxycut. You know the one with flabby bikini girl who gets ripped abs and frolicks on the beach. It was bad enough that you wasted your money and didn't see results but you might have also damaged your liver. There was a recall initiated by the FDA this week recalling all 14 Hydroxycut products because 23 people reported liver damage and one 19-year old boy died. These cases are submitted purely voluntarily so there may be many more for those of you playing the percentages. Oh, and if you're a statistics person saying that's only some miniscule percentage, please note that 95% of all diets, which include ingestibles like Hydroxcut, fail. That should help your analysis.

Fit Beach or Fat Beach?

My wife and I were fortunate enough to sneak away for a long weekend without the girls last week to visit the Wilmington, NC area. We've been two times in the past, but this visit was just us so we had plenty of time to explore and get to know the area. It's a desirable location on the coast of North Carolina that offers all the benefits of a beach town combined with the charm of a small city along the Cape Fear River. The best part is everything is just about 15 minutes away in any direction.

On Saturday, we had a plan to check out some neighborhoods and the surrounding area while leaving plenty of time in the afternoon to hit the beach. The specific area we like is called Wrightsville Beach and it's a relatively small spot just beyond the Intracoastal Waterway. Leading up to the draw bridge is a large community park with fields and walking trails. It must be a popular spot because over the course of the weekend, it was filled with strollers, bikes and joggers enjoying the perfect weather we had that weekend.

Dad's Day at Preschool

It's been on the calendar for weeks. My wife has reminded me a half dozen times. We've talked about it. We've speculated what might happen during the day...and today we found out. It was Dad's Day at Weems Creek Preschool for my oldest daughter Cate who is 3 1/2. The only instructions were to dress comfortably - good advice.

Fortunately for all of us, it was a beautiful day with sunny skies and temperatures in the 60's. That meant we took full advantage of the rock star playground complete with swings, climbing apparatus, tricycles, slides, and enough room to run around. The day was filled with activities from building a house out of styrofoam and golf tees to drawing a portrait of each other in crayon. I'm clearly not an engineer or an artist, and the great thing about a 3-year-old is they just don't care. We did silly dances and sang songs. It was the perfect day. Cate grabbed my hand from activity to activity as if we were the only two people in the room, and I loved every second of it.

High Anxiety - Part Two
First of all, thank you to all my friends, family and readers who reached out to me last week checking in after last week’s post. Yes, I really am fine and I’m not just being a pigheaded male and saying that – my body is telling me I’m okay. Anyway, the post really seemed to strike a cord with all the feedback I got. Here I thought I was touching on something personal because I thought it was slightly amusing yet many of you shared your similar stories of stress and anxiety. Thanks for sharing and making me feel part of the club (initiation kinda sucks!).

Today’s post isn’t about me but rather referencing a good article I read on the plane today in United’s Hemispheres Magazine. I think it accurately articulates how some degree of stress is good. It gives good examples of how to harness stress to make you perform better. At the end of the day, this analysis of stress applies to fitness, nutrition and just about everything else in life – balance is best.

Off to catch my flight and give my little girls a big Easter hug.

The Best Medicine for Stress

Like everyone else, I'm not immune to stress. In fact, a couple of weeks ago I went to the doctor for chest pains and dizziness. The reality is, I knew in my mind it was anxiety but it's hard to ignore chest pains and dizziness so I wanted to be safe, not sorry. It was also comforting to enter "chest pains" and "dizziness" into WebMD and get a simple 1 and 1/2 page summary of detailed symptoms whereby I mentally could check off about 90% of them.

Here's the part that's a little entertaining in retrospect. When I called the doctors office and told her my symptoms supported with my own self diagnosis of anxiety, she did what she is trained to do. "Where are you right now?" "Can you come in immediately?" and the best one, "Are there any big decisions affecting your life at the moment?" So I answered with "at work," "no," and "well..."

I went on to say, "Let's see, I own my own business in a terrible economy, I lost a ton of money in the stock market in the past year, my wife is due with our 3rd child in July, we just put our house on the market this week, and I'm turning 40 next month. Other than that, not much else going on." It's okay, you can laugh too, I still am while I write this. Hmmmm, when you actually take a step back for a minute and realize all the pressure we place on ourselves it's no wonder anxiety has a way of creeping into our world. All this happened about two weeks ago.

Today, I feel like my old self again thanks to my self prescribed medicine - exercise. I figure with so much going on around me that I can't control, the one thing I can control is the frequency of my workouts. I made it back to yoga this week after a much longer departure than I wanted and increased both my JumpSnap workouts and strength training routines. After taking a step back and talking to my doctor, it merely gave me the clarity that exercise is the oasis we all need during a difficult time many of us are facing at the moment.

I'm an optimist and know things will get better, they always do. I also like to learn from life experiences, and this was yet another good learning lesson. If you're feeling the stress and anxiety of life, break a sweat. It's the best retreat you can give your mind and your body.

Of course, what's better than to break a sweat with your very own JumpSnap. You could also help reduce my anxiety by telling all your friends to buy a JumpSnap Wink. We've created a special, limited time recession buster offer that gives you an extra $10 off your order. This is a pop-up offer, so make sure your system allows pop-ups to get the discount code or at least temporarily allow them.

Please tell as many people as you can and I (and my two daughters, baby #3 and my heart!) thank you in advance.
