The #1 Diet According to Scientists |
|
That's right, a new study from the respected New England Journal of Medicine just released their results comparing four different diets. Although the results aren't surprising to me, they will be for the millions of people who are searching for the next great diet cure. Before we announce the winner, here is some background on their study and some video from The Today Show if you prefer to watch it.
The study was unique because it tracked people for two years allowing them to catch those folks who lose weight initially but almost always put it back on after a few weeks of falling off the wagon. The study contained 811 overweight adults who were broken up into four groups and provided different diets with different levels of fat, protein and carbohydrates. They were smart to mimic some of the more popular diets many of us have likely tried (Atkins, Zone, South Beach, etc.) but without labeling them as such to avoid influencing the participant. Here's the best part, the head fake if you're a fan of the Last Lecture, the participants were also instructed to reduce their daily calories by 750, exercise 90 minutes per week, keep a food journal, and meet regularly with diet counselors to review progress. It's almost as if this is the disclaimer you see on every diet and weight loss pill on the market. |

JumpSnap Sweat by Equinox |
|
Wow! I had the pleasure of getting my @ss kicked today by group fitness trainer and manager Gia-Ninh Chuang at the exclusive Equinox Fitness center in Tysons Corner, VA. It is a new class recently created by Equinox called JumpSnap Sweat, and I can assure you the title accurately reflects its name. It's a relatively new class that's being offered in several of their high end clubs across the country which is very exciting for me personally. Not being a personal trainer myself, I'm always amazed by the creativity trainers can combine with JumpSnap. I learned early on not to try and dictate how the product should be incorporated in a group fitness setting and today was yet another reminder that I made the right decision.
The class itself was about 45 minutes long and it was interval based. We started with about five minutes of jumping followed by five minutes of strength training using light weight dumb bells. We did this basic alternating pattern for the entire class, and I know I'll feel it tomorrow. |

What inspires you? It's certainly a broad question, but one that I think deserves some time to consider. The answers will be different and varied based on a whole host of reasons mostly because inspiration should be personal. It should move you to want to take action - whether we do or not is a post for another day.
As you ponder the question, I would encourage you to lower your expectation. That's right, I said lower your expectation. It's something I've spent some time evaluating over the past few years, and although I'm not entirely sure of the driving force, lowering your expectation for what inspires you allows your awareness to expand. Let me explain. When we talk about inspiration, I think it's natural to think of larger than life examples and be moved by them. Surely it's inspirational that our nation elected the first African-American President despite your political views. It's inspirational to hear Super Bowl runner-up QB Kurt Warner's story of how he went from bagging groceries to Super Bowl MVP. And it's inspirational to watch NBC's The Biggest Loser and witness someone lose 100+ pounds and transform their life physically, mentally and emotionally. And one of the most recent inspirational stories of Captain Sullenberger and his crew that safely landed on the Hudson River saving all 155 passengers. These are easy examples. |

Following yesterday's post by my good friend Dr. Wells, I thought today's topic was appropriate. Because it's that time of year, I often get asked about the right approach to lose weight. It's usually asked in a context that the individual is expecting the holy grail of answers. The holy grail answer is fairly simple: consistent exercise and nutrition. That's it. Stop looking. Stop asking and start implementing.
For most, that answer is almost too basic to believe which means there won't be anyone to blame when you fail. After some thought and visualization as if I was sitting on the set of the Today Show across from Matt Lauer, here's my slightly altered response: Matt Lauer: We have the famed JumpSnap creator and best selling author of The Ah Ha's of Weight Loss in studio today to share some wisdom on the hot topic of weight loss. Brad, your book is filled with tips about how to lose weight the right way. What's the #1 tip to share with our audience about losing weight? Brad: That's a great question Matt, but there are actually two critical elements for anyone who is struggling to lose weight. #1 - Stop searching for a magic pill. They don't exist and if you leave any sliver of hope that they do, you are not going to take the right approach for sustainable weight loss. Let me ask you, if there was a pill that worked then why are three out of four US adults overweight? And #2 - Perfection is the enemy. |

Obama is Right, It's Time to Serve |
|
How could you not get swept up in it? I was riveted to the TV for hours alternating my inner feelings of joy, pride, inspiration and tears of support for our new leader. Not bad considering I didn't even vote for him. I'm the first one to admit my mistakes and although I'm not sure my vote was a mistake, I'm so thankful I came out on the losing end. Timing is a critical element in life and boy do we need something to believe in right now.
Don't worry, this isn't a political blog. As I watched and listened to our new leader share his vision for the world I couldn't help but hear his challenge and encouragement about service. Sure, the natural tendency is to think about donating your time or writing a check to an organization who is helping others. Perhaps you are inspired to clean up a school or feed the homeless or somehow support our troops - all wonderful actions of service. I'd like you to think about President Obama's call to service differently. Rather than helping others directly, I first want you to help yourself or a loved one. Odds are you are one of the 3-in-4 Americans who are overweight or obese and you probably think it only affects you. Speaking from experience, when you don't exercise and eat properly allowing weight gain to take hold, it's easy to think you are only hurting yourself. Think again. Or better yet, think second hand smoke. Look how many decades it took to prove that the smokers were also killing us non-smokers. |
