TLC's Big Medicine

If you're anything like me, part of your standard loop of channel surfing includes TLC, Discovery and A and E which all have some quality reality programs. In a recent posting I confessed to gaining inspiration from a variety of random sources. One of those happen to be Matt Roloff of the TLC program Little People Big World. The guy is incredible and despite all his obstacles he goes about life as if they don't exist. If you're ever feeling sorry for yourself or think the deck is stacked against you, walk in Matt's shoes for a day.

Anyway, TLC and others all seem to be including programs about obesity and some of the extreme proportion. I guess there is a new show called Big Medicine that focuses exclusively on gastric bypass becasue it's being advertised heavily and came on following LPBW. Ok, I got sucked in.

Initially, I was annoyed by the lead in of all these massively obese people saying things like 'it's my only hope' or 'this is the only thing that can work'. It's irritating becasue eventhough the majority of your stomach is removed, you still need to be able to demonstrate some level of discipline or the weight will ultimately come back which is almost never reported on.

The good news is the father and son surgury team who worked with 4 patients last night at least went into detail that there is a system and the prospective patient must demonstrate the abiltiy to lose some weight prior to the operation on a liquid only diet. Kudos to 1 guy who lost 100 lbs on the liquid diet. My natural question is, why couldn't he harness that same discipline with regular exercise and good nutrition? I mean an all liquid diet, now that's a challenge.

I was also pleased to see that 1 patient who was over 400 lbs did not make the cut because she couldn't stick to the diet. I'm not happy that she didn't get it but rather that they are not simply selling surgury as an easy fix.

I Hear This A Lot

This came up in my Google alerts and it captures so many emails and comments I get from customers who purchase JumpSnap that are pleasantly surprised by how rewarding the workout is. Rather than disect it too much, let me leave it to the author of Sawyers Specialties who does a wonderful job sharing her experience.

In May, I got sucked into watching an infomercial. I was watching TLC which I love for the Flip This House and Property Ladder series (and now The Real Deal as well). Anyway, they were showing this cool little contraption called a Jump Snap. It’s the coolest little computerized jump rope… without the rope. Of course I bought one LOL. I mean, all us girls jumped rope as kids, it was great fun, we could do it for hours, what fun, I’ll jump rope and lose weight. WOW, things sure change when you get older. The Jump Snap worked exactly like they said it did, it came with a great little workout video with a couple of perky girls doing the beginning 8 minute workout. Phfft. Eight minutes I thought, I could do 8 minutes standing on my head surely….. Well, I gotta tell you, jumping rope at my age wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. The workout is broken down into 2 minutes sessions with water breaks. I won’t need water for just 8 minutes, how ridiculous…. ok, after two minutes, I’m gasping and heaving… pausing the video.. filling a water bottle to chug and I’m ready for the next 2 minutes….. they want us to do jumping jacks!! I think I’m going to die… pause video…. more water…. I made it almost 5 minutes on my first workout. Almost 6 on the second workout… 7 1/2 on the 3rd workout and on the 4th.. yeah for me, I made it through a whole 8 minutes. The Jump Snap itself will tell you exactly how long you’ve jumped and how many times you’ve jumped. So, I know when I’m tired and not jumping as many times as the workout before (I keep a spreadsheet of my progress… date, length of workout, and jumps… to keep myself committed and accountable for keeping up with a routine. I tried to keep up 4-5 times a week with the 8 minute program and was almost instantly gratified with losing an inch off my waist, and half an inch of my hips. I got back in to several of my pants that I couldn’t button just a few weeks earlier.

Congrats Sawyer and keep up the good work! Thanks for sharing your story and your support of JumpSnap! You will surely inspire others to stick with it even when they might feel like they can't do it.

20-Minute Beach Workout

I always encourage people to take advantage of their surroundings to create a new and rewarding workout. It wouldn't be valid advice if I didn't lead by example so I set out to the beach for a quick yet stimulating workout this afternoon.

The great thing about using your local environment is that it's usually very cost effective if not free. All I used today were 5 plastic cups (yup, the ones that are usually reserved for a fun rum drink). I then set up a plastic cup approxiamtely every 10 yards and dug it into the sand. Remember those old school suicide drills that almost made you want to puke in gym class? For those that don't remember, a suicide is an interval type of running drill where you have a starting line then run to the 1st cone, back to the starting line, then to the 2nd cone, back to the starting line, then to the 3rd cone, back to the starting line, then to the 4th cone, back to the starting line, then to the 5th and last cone and all the way back to the starting line.

Here's what I did for my beach workout:

* 1 half speed suicide as a warmup

* 1 medium speed suicide

* 1 faster speed suicide but instead of just touching each cone I did 10 pushups for a total of 50

* 1 suicide where I ran to each cone but on the way back to the starting line I did high knees....ugh, sounded much better on paper

* 1 suicide running backwards to each cone and forward to the starting line

* (3) 50 yards dashes

It was relatively quick but I can assure you I was breathing hard and worked up a good lather. The great news about a beach workout is that you can end it the way I did with a refreshing dip in the ocean.

How do you take advantage of your surroundings to create a stimulating workout?

Think Before You Say 'I Can't'

Vacations are a great time for reflection, especially during nap time when you can actually gather your own thoughts.

Today's entry can be applied to just about anything in life but let's primarily focus on all the excuses we make for not leading a healthier life. The phrase 'I can't' really means 'I won't'. If you actually stopped for a moment to really evaluate why you either told someone else or simply tried to convince yourself in your head why you couldn't work out that day, I think you might be a little embarassed.

I take inspiration mostly from a collection of small things that we all come across in our everyday lives.

Rob sailing

For example, check out my good friend Rob Klein , he's the one on the tiller waving. Rob is a quadrapalegic from mid chest down with partial function of his hands. He's waving because he just took home first place in the annual CRAB (Chesapeake Region Adaptive Boaters) Cup placing 1st in 7 of 8 races over the course of 2 days. Here's a guy who has been bound by a wheel chair for the past 7 years from a freak accident and lives a richer and more adventurous life since the accident than he did before it. Guys like Rob are and should be an inspiration to us all. Not the guilt ridden kind of inspiration but more the, get off your ass and just do it type of inspiration. You don't think he would trade just about anything in the world to be able to do a push up, sit up, squat, cycle, or run?

There are thousands of Rob's all around us all the time. They certianly all aren't dissabled or happen to be one of your best friends. Think about the working class family that works 2 jobs to support his or her family and still makes time to exercise. It's about embracing life to the fullest and in my opinion in order to do that, to the fullest, your life scenses will pop with apprecaiton if you do it while maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Are You in Emergency Response Shape?

Greetings from Amelia Island again.

Guess what we were awoken to last night at 1am, the fire alarm. That's right, that loud annoying beep and flashing light every 4 or 5 seconds. Once we realized it wasn't a cell phone or something else in the condo, we quickly leaped from bed and gathered in the open air hallway with several other vacationers all with the same look on our faces 'is it real?'. Your inner voice keeps telling you it's a false alarm and you should just go back to bed but as a relatively new father with 2 little ones fast asleep, there's a whole new level of pressure and mind racing next steps to consider.

Fortunately for us and the rest of the occupants, it did turn out to be a false alarm ...as did the 2nd, 3rd and 4th alarm that occured around 3am...good times, but thankfully the girls did not move an inch. Once the adrenilin wore off of crafting the perfect escape route in my head (I would grab Cate because she weighs more, my wife would get Emily, I had the keys for rental car, we had 1 bag of essentials, my wallet, cell phone, etc...you get the idea), it hit me that this could really be a challenge for someone who isn't in good shape or worse yet if you're 2 of 3 people that are over weight or obese. Think about it, what if there was a fire and the escape routes were blocked requiring us to escape using a ladder or tied together sheets or something crazy. I know it sounds far fetched but being in good shape could not only save your own life but many of us are depended upon by our kids and other family memebers. For me, it was a sobering thought and one that I'm glad I could answer with confidence that I would be ready (especially now that I'm 50 lbs lighter).

This one small example can be a substitute for just about any natural disaster whether it's something as devastating as Katrina or a tornado or flood or even a forest fire. None of us ever expect ourselves to be in that situation but if you were, would you be ready? Do you have the strength, stamina and conditioning to save your own life and more importantly, your families lives?
