Happy Summer Dads! Now that Memorial Day is behind us and the pool is open, summer is in full swing. Did you lose that beer gut you talked about before jumping in with your season-opening cannon ball? Are you aware of the endless plate of BBQ that's available this time of year because we all over estimate how much should be placed on the grill?
If you've taken control of your own health and begun the process of small changes for life long benefits, bravo. If you're still talking about it and not sure if you missed the window, you didn't - so join us today. Yes, today is always better than tomorrow.
For those of you who are still searching for a magic pill like I did for the seven years prior to getting serious, I want to share with you some amazing insight into what success looks like and sounds like fresh off the press from my good friend, Toby. I continue to be inspired by him and share his journey because it's so powerful. Here are some quotes of recent comments he's made to help you personalize what real success looks like: "This morning the scale revealed that I lost my 20th & 21st lb. Brad, I really want to thank you again for giving me my "ah-ha moment" back in March with Hey Dad Lose the Gut!" Translation - It's almost mid June, and he's been working at it consistently for over three months. The weight didn't appear overnight, so it's certainly not going to disappear overnight. Set the proper expectation of 1lb. per week. If you lose more than that, count it as a bonus! |

It's Friday, and therefore, it is appropriate to talk about beer! Then again, it's always appropriate to talk about beer isn't it? I wanted to share a great story about one of my GWL Club members and fellow Dads from this week. It's a great story that I suspect many dad's out there can relate to.
I was on the phone with this member reviewing his data which led us to his Food Log. This guy has a very demanding job which often involves meals out and entertainment with clients. I'm happy to announce he's lost 7 lbs in his first three weeks on the program which is a huge accomplishment. What was great about our discussion was the focus on his liquid calories. You see, one evening he had one Bud Light and four Summer Fest brews while out with clients. These five beers accounted for about 35% of his total calories for the day which actually put him in a calorie surplus for the day by 86 calories. Not what we want when trying to lose weight.

You'll often here me refer to my girls as my "why" with regards to staying fit and healthy. But days like Wednesday bring it to life. You see, Wednesday was Dad's Day at my oldest daughter Cate's pre-school. It was awesome! We arrived at a local park at 9:00 AM for coffee, juice and doughnuts. That's right, I said doughnuts. I didn't have one but Cate meticulously scouted out the perfect pastry with pink icing and colored sprinkles on top. We don't get them very often so she was especially excited to devour her deep-fried doughy treat.
As the rest of the dad's rolled in, we got comfortable under the pavilion for some quality dance performances that only 4 and 5 year-olds can deliver. I'm happy to announce that 15 out of 18 dad's were present, and for the most part, are in pretty good health. The line dancing migrated into some sort of "hula hoop meets musical chairs" contest which truly separated the men from the boys. The object being to pass the hula hoop from one person to the next while standing in a circle holding hands. You couldn't use your fingers to advance the hoop so it paid to be flexible and shimmy and shake the thing over head to the child or dad to your right. If you've ever tuned in to the latest game show, Minute to Win It, it easily could have been a Level 5. Cate and I crushed it! |

Hey Dad, Lose The Gut - Dads Helping Dads |
|
Happy Monday Dads! I hope you are ready for a new week, and I hope you've found plenty of inspiration this weekend to keep you on a path of healthy living. As our community of committed dads grows, I wanted to share two quick stories that highlight the power of camaraderie. Sure it sounds simple, but I know some of you will have a harder time reaching out for help than others. A good place to start is by dropping the "macho-bullshit mindset" that makes you think you have to do it all yourself. It's much harder and not nearly as fun to go through this journey alone.
Let me first highlight something a new dad I met last week shared with me. Shawn is from Connecticut and like all of us, is inspired to lose 30 lbs for his 7-year-old daughter. He's also a new member to the GWL Club so we're having a great time working together on his game plan. During one of our recent discussions, Shawn told me about a growing group of dads in his area that have formed an exercise group with the common goal of losing weight. The group is about 30 guys strong and growing. This is such a smart move and will undoubtedly help all the dads hold each other accountable. It's been proven in study after study that those people who exercise in a group lose up to twice as much weight as those that go it alone. |

Hey Dad, Lose The Gut - Soccer Anyone? |
|
Greetings JSN! I'm writing to you this week from the 4th annual Urban Soccer Collaborative Symposium in conjunction with US Soccer Foundation. This years theme is titled "Soccer...It Does a Body Good." I'm one of the presenters during the breakfast slot sharing my philosophy about weight loss. It's always fun when they put the weight loss guy during one of the meals. "Put the doughnut down and step away from the buffet table..."
The focus is primarily on the underpriviledged urban youth market with lots of discussion about what else - childhood obesity. The passion in the room is off the charts. The grass roots approach to keep the focus on the kids is admirable. So many of the speakers and attendees just want to succeed and do more for their kids in the program. Isn't that exactly what we talk about the goal is for us dad's - to get healthy for our kids? |
