By now you've heard of the 33 men trapped in the Chilean mine deep below the earth's surface. Of course it's wonderful news that they were found alive and by all accounts, doing quite well. The challenging news is that it's projected to take up to four months to get them out having to drill over 2,000 feet below the surface.
If the wait wasn't brutal enough, they are now being told the maximum waist size is 35 inches to fit into the recovery capsule. Now that's taking your weight to a whole new level of life and death. Could you imagine being a guy who couldn't fit into the rescue capsule? Here's an eye opening quote for most men and dads out there. "Even though the miners have undoubtedly lost a significant amount of weight, Chilean officials are trying to ensure they don't bulk up before their rescue. They say the miners will have to be no more than 35 inches around the waist to make it out of the tunnel. Most Americans couldn't meet the 35-inch limit. The average U.S. waistline is 39.7 inches for men according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. " |

The "Marcus" Level of Commitment |
|
Having just returned from another visit to Eden Prairie, MN and the home of ShopNBC, I wanted to share a story of inspiration. As some of you know, I like to draw inspiration from many sources; known or unknown, big or small, weight loss related or otherwise. Sometimes they have a lasting impression on me while other times it just gets me over a hump. Both of which can be equally as powerful.
This story is about Marcus. He started out as my cab driver and later turned into what felt like my personal chauffeur. Since my first flight was delayed and I was only going to be there for two nights, I took a cab from the airport to the hotel. I arrived at the hotel at 11:15 PM local time but had to be at ShopNBC at midnight for my 1:00 AM CST airing, so I called the suggested local cab company for an 11:45 PM ride to their offices. They were very polite and said "no problem". As I sat outside the lobby speaking to the dispatcher at 11:45 inquiring about my cab, Marcus pulls ups in his mini-van cab with automatic doors dropping off another group. |

Sorry fellas, I'm not talking about your favorite Chinese restaurant. I'm referring to my recent stop at Panera Bread restaurant who has taken the lead to update their large overhead menu with all the calorie counts by item. This is really an important step, and I hope other restaurants begin to follow suit. I appreciate so much what they are doing, and I've already been back a second time to support them.
So the jackpot question is this: "Did it affect my ordering choices?" The answer is a resounding yes! The salads have more calorie than you would think, and the 440 calorie chocolate chip cookies are tasty but big calorie bombs. A surprise item is their strawberry lemonade smoothie which is only 150 calories so the girls split one without any concern.
To those that don't think this type of information will help drive healthier choices, you are wrong. This will absolutely help many dads and families alike make better choices by raising their awareness. Given our high frequency of eating out, it's even more important. Please feel free to challenge your favorite dining spots to get on board and following the example Panera is setting. Healthy Jumping... |

So what's the deal with cleansing products and claims? Great question - I'm glad you asked. I've always been leery of the cleanse-based cocktails that promise the world with no real science to back it up so I like to promote a different approach.
When giving my weight loss presentation to dads, I use a participation approach to prove the importance of exercise and nutrition while illustrating the point as to when you feel it. Since most of you know that I promote a 50/50 philosophy of exercise and nutrition for weight loss and promoting a healthy lifestyle, I first start out with the exercise part of the equation. I ask the audience to stand up and do the JumpSnap. Of course this is a virtual version...kind of like the virtual lawn mower, virtual shopping cart or my all time favorite, the virtual sprinkler you may have seen me do over the years at any number of wedding receptions (go ahead, I can hear you laughing!). |

It seems I often get questions from people who want to lose weight about how to get started. I guess this makes sense because getting started and not getting started usually separates those that talk about it versus those that actually take action and begin the journey. I also get this question as a last resort from those still searching for a magic pill solution who are hoping my response is a specific remedy. Sorry, those answers end up in the overflowing "failure bucket".
On the topic of getting started, I wanted to share an inspirational story of one of my new dads who is doing a tremendous job in his first couple of weeks. His name is Joe, and he is the perfect new member of the group because he's admittedly overweight, wants to make a change and has two kids he loves deeply and doesn't want to let down. In fact, in one of our first discussions, he shared with me that he quit smoking about six months ago because his kids pleaded with him to do so. This is just the type of story I'm looking for when evaluating a dad's level of commitment.
