This months Women’s Heath Magazine features Biggest Loser' trainer Jillian Michaels on the cover. After reading the interview with Michaels I am not surprised that her comments have created a backlash. She reveals that she is unwilling to become pregnant because of the way it would change her body. "I'm going to adopt. I can't handle doing that to my body," she told the magazine. "Also, when you rescue something, it's like rescuing a part of yourself."
The first thing I thought of was all of the moms I have had the pleasure of training over the years, these women worked out and ate healthy to regain their pre-pregnancy physique. As a personal trainer, I have witnessed first-hand women who have become even more fit after pregnancy. There are multiple celebrities who have transformed their bodies post-pregnancy, think: Madonna, Reese Witherspoon, Keri Russell, Kelly Ripa, Gwen Stefani, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Halle Berry, Kate Hudson, Jennifer Garner, Katie Holmes, Jennifer Lopez, Pam Anderson, Brooke Burke and 12-pack Olympian Dara Torres. Yes, these women work out and eat right to lose the baby weight, but the idea that pregnancy ruins your body is wrong. It’s unfortunate that someone who is looked to by millions of people for health and fitness advice has such a negative view of childbirth.
Below is a sample of how some celebrity moms got back into shape:
Dara Torres Olympian Dara Torres said that her motivation to stay healthy is her daughter and her family and her place in their world. What keeps her beautiful is her love for her sport and her family.
Catherine Zeta-Jones This Hollywood actress gained 50 pounds while she was pregnant with her first son, Dylan. She believes portion control helped her lose her baby weight and she hired a nutrition coach to help her choose the right types of foods in the right amounts. She loaded up on foods like lean meats, fish and veggies. She also believes drinking lots of water and getting enough sleep are important for a healthy lifestyle.
Kelly Ripa The fact that a woman with 3 kids, a husband, and more jobs than one person should have in a lifetime, still finds the time to look like this is truly amazing! The Live with Regis and Kelly star says she believes in moderation and doesn’t count calories but she does fill up on things like fish, fruit, nuts, and yogurt. She does 3-5 mile runs 5 days a week; she also takes ballet barre classes at Physique 57 in New York four times a week. alone.
Uma Thurman Uma turned to a personal trainer/nutritionist and got healthy food delivered to her.
Kate Hudson Kate worked out six days a week. Her diet regimen consisted of smaller meals spread throughout the day, consisting of higher protein foods and restrictions on certain carbohydrates such as grains and some fruits.
Debra Messing Debra said breast-feeding helped her shed 33 pounds. She exercises and maintains a healthy diet to stay fit. These are high profile success stories but there are millions of moms out there who are a testament to the fact that pregnancy does not mean you cannot maintain and return to optimum health and have a physique you are proud of. Health and fitness improve motherhood, and I have often heard and seen firsthand how being a parent motivates you to be the best version of yourself for those you love.
All the best to the mothers out there and everyone else who strives for optimum health!
