Is Birth Control Weighing You Down? |
|
More than17 million women take birth control in the United States. Sure, the pill is affective and convenient, however, few think about what it can do to their bodies and even less think about what it does to their gains in the gym. Since birth control fools your body into thinking it’s pregnant this can alter your hormones, cause weight gain, alter sex drive and even influence protein synthesis.
According to “Fitness Rx,” a study done by Texas A&M found that women taking oral contraception showed a reduced response to weight training. During the 10 week study, women using the pill developed 60 % less muscle then women who didn’t use oral contraceptives. Although the strength gains were similar, the women taking birth control showed lower levels of an important hormone known as IGF-I, or Growth Hormone. |

Tired of Buying Tasteless Fruit? |
|
Sick of wasting your money on fruit that doesn’t taste good? ME TOO! So here are the best ways to pick your fruits to ensure excellent taste and the most antioxidants. Picking fruit can be deceptive sometimes. Most look for color, fullness, and the texture of the fruit. However, fruits such as apricots, peaches, nectarines, blueberries, cantaloupe, and honeydew all get their sweetness from the sap of the plant. So looking for these things doesn’t mean you are going to get a great tasting piece of fruit.
While some fruits have the ability to continue ripening on your counter-tops, other stop maturing after they have been picked. These fruits include, soft berries, cherries, citrus, watermelon, pineapple, and grapes. If you try them in the store and they aren’t ripe then they won’t be any better in a couple of days.

Beware of the Ball Park Hot Dog! |
Love going to the ball park in the summer and getting a hot dog? Don’t we all, but could this ball game treat be worth cheating for? The dog alone is 240 calories with 22 grams of fat and 8 grams of protein. The bun is another 170 calories for a grand total of 410 calories!
Don’t forget, this is without condiments! Once you add a beverage (usually a couple of beers) or a dessert, your day at the park could require an extra day or two at the gym.
The stadium actually has some pretty healthy options called “health plates carts” which give outstanding options for health nuts. Check these out next time you visit your favorite big league park. |

Your taste buds form your sensitivities to foods - what foods you like, what foods you dislike, and sometimes how much you consume. Originally, it was thought that the human tongue only had 5 senses; sweet, bitter, salty, sour and umami (a taste that identifies foods rich in protein). However, researches from the University of Adelaide, CSIRO, and Massey University (New Zealand) have identified the SIXTH sense which is the sensitivity to fat. This sense could also predetermine your ability to lose weight and keep weight off.
Researchers studied a variety of people and their “threshold for” fat. They used various fatty acids and tested their sensitivity levels. As a result, they found that some people had a high threshold, while others did not. Looking even deeper into the study, they then compared the BMI’s of each group. People who could taste fat more readily had lower BMI’s.
